Addis Ababa, July 10, 2026 (FMC) — Former Speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Federation Keriya Ibrahim has alleged that the defunct TPLF group is deliberately destroying Tigray’s newgeneration through what she described as systematic methods, while preparing the region for another round of conflict.
Originally from the Tigray region, Keriya previously served as a senior TPLF leader and as Speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Federation. She is currently a member of the Samri Democratic Party.
Speaking on the current situation in the Tigray region, Keriya claimed that the group has violated the Pretoria Peace Agreement and is attempting to destabilize Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa by forging alliances with what she described as internal and external extremist and violent groups under the name “Tsimdo.”
Keriya said the Pretoria Peace Agreement had opened a genuine path to peace by silencing the guns and restoring hope to the people of Tigray. She noted that, in accordance with the agreement, the federal government rebuilt conflict-damaged infrastructure and restored public institutions, creating conditions for residents to return to normal life.
She added that the agreement facilitated the restoration of essential social and economic services, the establishment of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration, and the implementation of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) program, under which former combatants received rehabilitation and financial assistance to reintegrate into their communities.
According to Keriya, however, the rump TPLF used the peace agreement as an opportunity to regroup rather than fully implement its commitments. She alleged that the group repeatedly undermined the Interim Regional Administration, convened what she described as an illegal council through an unlawful electoral process, and formed an administration that lacks recognition from the country’s relevant legal authorities.
She further claimed that the rump TPLF is systematically preparing for another conflict by recruiting young people, separating children from their families, and shutting schools to facilitate military training. According to her, these actions are intended to deprive Tigray’s younger generation of education and a peaceful future while causing continued suffering for families across the region.
Keriya also alleged that the rump TPLF is seeking alliances with internal and external hostile forces under the banner of “Tsimdo” to destabilize Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa, while drawing the people of Tigray into another cycle of conflict.
She further claimed that the group is involved in the illicit exploitation of gold and other mineral resources in collaboration with Eritrea and is sending young people to Sudan to generate foreign currency for the purchase of weapons.
The former House Speaker also alleged that the rump TPLF has committed serious human rights violations, including the forcible recruitment of children, which she said could warrant accountability under both Ethiopian and international law. She added that such actions have drawn condemnation from various countries and international organizations.
Keriya said public opposition to the group is increasing in Tigray, arguing that mothers, young people and other residents are resisting what she described as its attempts to return the region to conflict.
She called on Ethiopian elders, the international community and relevant institutions to work together to counter what she described as the group’s destabilizing activities and to support lasting peace in the region.
