Deputy PM praises Jigjiga’s rapid urban transformation and regional impact

Jigjiga, July 30, 2025 (FMC) — Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh on Tuesday praised the Somali Region capital Jigjiga for its accelerated infrastructure development and rising role as a model for urban transformation in Ethiopia.

Received by Somali Region President Mustafe Omer, regional cabinet members, elders, and local residents at Gerad Wilwal Airport, Temesgen’s visit coincided with national preparations for the Green Legacy campaign, which aims to plant 700 million tree seedlings tomorrow.

In remarks shared on social media, the Deputy Prime Minister described Somali Region as “a land of deep-rooted traditions and pastoral strength,” highlighting its strategic location as a gateway to the east and its growing contribution to Ethiopia’s livestock economy.

He toured key infrastructure projects in Jigjiga, particularly the city’s main corridor development, which he said has “adorned the Eastern Star with a golden aura of beauty.” Initiated eight months ago in two phases, the project is nearing completion. It features widened asphalt roads, pedestrian and bicycle lanes, and a new urban layout that integrates recreational, residential, and business spaces aligned with a long-term master plan.

Temesgen also reviewed ongoing works addressing long-standing urban challenges, including irrigation and smart city systems designed to mitigate flooding, the construction of youth sports facilities, electric vehicle charging stations, and expanded parking infrastructure.

He noted that the city is becoming a benchmark for other urban centers in the region, citing the integration of water, lighting, telecom, and road networks as a sign of strong, coordinated progress. He encouraged both regional and federal actors to build on this momentum to further accelerate Jigjiga’s transformation.
