Deputy PM Says Ethiopia Opens Bold Chapter in Securing Trade and Logistics Independence

Addis Ababa, March 17, 2026 (FMC) — Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh said Ethiopia is advancing its trade and logistics infrastructure with the expansion of the Indode Dry Port and the completion of the AMG–Indode Railway Line, marking a significant step toward economic self-reliance.

The Deputy Prime Minister shared the developments on social media following a site visit to the projects today, emphasizing that the initiatives reflect the government’s focus on modernizing trade logistics and improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the national transport system.

The AMG–Indode Railway Line is a 3-kilometer spur connecting the Gelan Industrial Zone to the national railway network and is Ethiopia’s first railway project fully financed by a domestic private company.

Mr. Temesgen asserted that the Indode Dry Port Expansion will increase container storage capacity fivefold and reduce cargo handling times from 10 hours to two, enabling faster and more cost-efficient movement of goods, particularly high-value exports such as coffee.

He claimed that the projects “open a bold new chapter in securing our logistics sovereignty through full self-reliance,” highlighting that the railway’s completion ahead of schedule demonstrates the principle: “Plan to start, start to finish.”

Mr. Temesgen noted that these homegrown, self-financed infrastructure investments strengthen Ethiopia’s economic sovereignty while modernizing trade logistics. The rail spur and expanded port facilities are expected to improve service speed and reduce costs for exporters and businesses operating both domestically and internationally.

The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s determination to position Ethiopia as Africa’s premier trade and industrial hub, underlining that strategic infrastructure development and private-sector engagement are central to advancing competitiveness and economic independence.
