Addis Ababa, October 5, 2025 (FMC) — Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh praised the Amhara Regional Police’s modernization efforts and highlighted Bahir Dar’s rapid development during his recent visit to the city.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Amhara Regional Police’s new headquarters and digital reform system, DPM Temesgen lauded the region’s “dual struggle”: a determined fight against extremism, crime, and lawlessness alongside efforts to combat poverty and underdevelopment. “The Amhara Region is waging and winning two critical battles—against destructive forces and against poverty,” he said, noting that the success of the police reform is a powerful symbol of these victories.
Commissioner Zelalem Mengiste, Head of the Amhara Regional Police Commission, explained that the reforms aim to build a professional, accountable, and technology-driven police force capable of meeting the region’s evolving security challenges. He added that the restructuring has granted operational independence while ensuring accountability to regional leadership.
“The modernization of our police force is enhancing our capacity to prevent organized crime and counter anti-peace activities,” Commissioner Zelalem stated, noting that the new headquarters is specifically designed to support advanced crime prevention, investigation, and overall institutional excellence.
Temesgen emphasized that the reform extends beyond infrastructure and technology. “The police must serve the public impartially, free from political interference, religious bias, corruption, and tribalism,” he said, adding that the reforms aim to rebuild public trust, protect citizens, uphold justice, and ensure lasting peace.
During his visit, Temesgen toured development projects across Bahir Dar, praising the city’s abundant natural resources, innovative spirit, and rapid progress. In a social media post, he expressed gratitude to the Regional President and his Cabinet for their warm hospitality and reception at the international airport.
The Deputy Prime Minister also reiterated the federal government’s ongoing efforts to foster national reconciliation. While some armed groups have begun to disarm and join the peace process, he warned that those rejecting peaceful solutions would face legal consequences.
Describing the reform as “historic, timely, and inspiring,” Temesgen pledged the federal government’s full support for its successful implementation, reaffirming the commitment to building a safer and more prosperous Amhara Region.
