Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said the country’s Green Legacy Initiative has turned collective action into a promise for future generations, as millions of Ethiopians from all walks of life joined a nationwide one-day campaign to plant 800 million seedlings.
In a message shared during the ongoing Green Legacy planting campaign, the Deputy Prime Minister said Ethiopians came together before the first light touched the country’s mountains, plains, and valleys, united by a shared responsibility to build a greener and more sustainable future.
He said the participation of children and elders, farmers and scholars, workers and students, as well as communities from cities and remote areas, demonstrates the unity and commitment driving Ethiopia’s environmental restoration efforts.
Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen said the ambitious one-day planting campaign reflects the spirit that defines the Green Legacy Initiative — beginning with vision, advancing through determination, and achieving results through unity.
He noted that the initiative has grown beyond an environmental program into a national transformation effort that is strengthening food security, restoring forests, protecting watersheds, creating livelihoods, and empowering a generation committed to building a healthier and more resilient nation.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the achievements of the Green Legacy Initiative are increasingly extending beyond Ethiopia’s borders, inspiring others across the region through the country’s experience in environmental restoration and sustainable development.
He emphasized that every seedling planted represents an investment in Ethiopia’s future, adding that the collective efforts of Ethiopians are contributing to the creation of a stronger, greener, and more resilient country for generations to come.
