Diplomatic Community and International Partners Extend Wide-Ranging Congratulations on 130th Anniversary of Adwa Victory

Addis Ababa, March 2, 2026 (FMC) — Diplomatic missions, international organizations and global partners extended messages of congratulations to Ethiopia on the occasion of its National Day and the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa, recognizing the historical significance of the commemoration and its enduring symbolism of sovereignty and resilience.

The German Embassy in Addis Ababa conveyed warm congratulations to Ethiopians on the anniversary and highlighted the importance of preserving historical heritage. During her CityWalk initiative, Ambassador of Germany to Ethiopia Birgitt Ory visited the Adwa Victory Museum, which the embassy described as an impressive institution documenting Ethiopia’s unique history and independence.

Messages of goodwill also came from other diplomatic missions. The Russian Embassy in Addis Ababa wished Ethiopians prosperity and success on the occasion of Adwa Victory Day, while the British Embassy in Addis Ababa extended brief greetings recognizing the historic significance of the anniversary.

The Australian Embassy in Ethiopia acknowledged the importance of the commemoration and noted that Ethiopians continue to celebrate the legacy of Adwa through nationwide events and public ceremonies. The embassy commended Ethiopia on the 130th anniversary, emphasizing the enduring relevance of the historic milestone.

Similarly, the Embassy of Canada in Ethiopia expressed warm wishes and honored the courage, unity and resilience that characterized the Adwa victory. It described the historic event as a symbol of national pride and collective determination.

The Embassy of Burundi in Ethiopia emphasized the transformative significance of the anniversary, stating that the victory demonstrated the power of determination to shape history. It highlighted Adwa as an inspiration for building partnerships and shared opportunities.

Additional messages of recognition came from the Embassy of Sweden in Ethiopia, which extended special greetings to Ethiopians celebrating the anniversary, and from the Embassy of Cuba in Ethiopia, which commemorated the historic battle as a landmark victory and a symbol of African dignity and resistance.

European and multilateral institutions also joined in the celebrations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland sent best wishes to Ethiopia on Adwa Victory Day, while the Embassy of Armenia in Ethiopia congratulated Ethiopia and highlighted longstanding cultural and historical ties between the two nations.

The African Development Bank Group conveyed its good wishes to Ethiopians, recognizing the importance of the national commemoration and the role of development partnerships in advancing economic progress.

International diplomatic messages also reflected broader recognition of Ethiopia’s historical and contemporary significance. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar extended greetings on Ethiopia’s National Day and reaffirmed commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Ethiopia. The Ministry of External Affairs of India echoed these sentiments with heartfelt congratulations to the Ethiopian people.

A message from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov marked the anniversary of Adwa, describing the battle as the first major victory of an African state over a colonial power and a milestone that inspired independence movements across the continent. He emphasized the longstanding friendship between Russia and Ethiopia and highlighted cooperation in international organizations such as the United Nations and BRICS, alongside joint development projects in trade, science and humanitarian sectors.

The African Union Commission also commemorated the anniversary. Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described Adwa as a defining affirmation of African sovereignty and unity.
