Dire Dawa Testing Laboratory to Expand Quality Assurance Services, Says PM Abiy Ahmed

Addis Ababa, March 8, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the Dire Dawa Testing Laboratory Center is planning to expand its integrated quality assurance services, reflecting the facility’s growing role in safeguarding public health and supporting industrial development.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed traveled to Dire Dawa today, where he toured the Dire Dawa Testing Laboratory Center and observed its operations before sharing his reflections on social media.

“The Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise is a government organization that provides quality assurance services for products and services. It operates based on international procedures and systems, delivering certification services to manufacturers, service providers, exporters, importers, regulatory authorities, research institutions, and the wider consumer community,” PM Abiy wrote.

“In the Dire Dawa area, in addition to the quality assurance services previously provided to manufacturers and service providers, as well as services related to the free trade zone and the dry port, the enterprise has expanded accessibility by establishing a new testing laboratory,” he added.

“This laboratory enables the provision of quality assurance services for edible oils, petroleum and fuel products, various food products, cosmetic and detergent products, and different construction materials and inputs.”

The Prime Minister also emphasized the broader benefits of the initiative: “Previously, the country lacked the ability to test petroleum products domestically and provide quality assurance services. Establishing these facilities helps save a significant amount of foreign currency that the government used to spend on these services overseas. Additionally, this initiative is an important step toward improving fuel quality and protecting the environment, helping create a cleaner, pollution-free area.”
