Addis Ababa, June 26, 2026 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has signed a 3 billion birr electricity infrastructure reconstruction project agreement with Alphana Capital, an engineering and materials supply company, aimed at improving power distribution and enhancing the reliability of electricity services in selected cities.
The project will be implemented in Ambo, Nekemte, and Assosa, and is expected to modernize and strengthen electricity infrastructure while reducing power interruptions and technical faults across the distribution network.
EEU Chief Executive Officer Getu Geremew said the initiative will contribute to improving electricity supply in urban centers and ensuring more reliable service delivery for customers. He emphasized the importance of completing the project within the planned timeframe and according to the required quality standards.
The reconstruction project includes the upgrading and rehabilitation of 325 kilometers of medium-voltage electricity lines, which is expected to expand network capacity and reduce system outages.
In addition, 235 transformers will be upgraded and reconstructed under the project, including 70 in Ambo, 121 in Nekemte, and 44 in Assosa.
EEU indicated that the project, which will be completed within two years, is supported by financing from the World Bank.
