EHRC Says Ethiopia’s 7th General Election Conducted Peacefully and in Line with International Standards

Addis Ababa, June 2, 2026 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has described Ethiopia’s 7th General Election as peaceful, democratic, and conducted in accordance with international standards.

Speaking at a press briefing today, EHRC Chief Commissioner Berhanu Adelo said the Commission deployed observers and experts across various areas to closely monitor the electoral process.

According to the Chief Commissioner, the Commission’s observation and monitoring activities confirmed that the election was carried out peacefully and democratically, while also meeting internationally recognized standards.

He noted that the necessary election materials were distributed appropriately and made available on time to facilitate the voting process.

Addressing the long queues reported at some polling stations on election day, Berhanu said the Commission raised the issue with the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), which subsequently took corrective measures.

The EHRC also indicated that it will continue monitoring post-election developments and will make public any findings identified through its ongoing observation activities.
