Addis Ababa, July 4, 2026 (FMC) – Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, has underscored the importance of strong leadership readiness to effectively respond to complex geopolitical dynamics and Ethiopia’s broader national strategic priorities, including its pursuit of access to the sea.
Speaking at the Ethiopian National Defense College graduation ceremony held today, he emphasized that the evolving security environment demands leaders who are well-prepared, adaptive, and capable of translating strategic knowledge into effective operational leadership.
The Ethiopian National Defense College graduated senior military officers who completed advanced studies in strategy and security, alongside leaders from civil and other security institutions.
The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs of the House of People’s Representatives, Dima Negeo, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, and other senior government and defense officials.
The Chief of Staff noted that graduates are expected to demonstrate practical leadership by applying their academic training in real operational and institutional contexts.
He further stated that the armed forces are undertaking significant preparatory work and called on graduates to contribute with dedication, discipline, and high motivation toward national priorities.
Commander of the College, Brigadier General Tilahun Demissie, said the institution has trained a total of 577 participants through regular and short-term programs since its establishment.
He added that the College continues to expand in line with ongoing reforms within the defense sector and is engaged in research activities that provide input for policy and strategic decision-making.
Graduates said the training they received will strengthen their ability to understand the evolving geopolitical landscape, anticipate security threats, and manage complex crises effectively.
The graduates are drawn from the Ministry of Defense, civil security institutions, and regional security bodies, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen national integration, enhance inter-agency cooperation, and safeguard Ethiopia’s national security.
