ENDF marching band earns global spotlight, elevates nation’s cultural legacy

Addis Ababa, September 2, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s National Defense Forces (ENDF) Marching Band has garnered international acclaim by showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage at the Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival in Moscow, Russia, held from August 22 to 31, 2025.

Performing for the first time at this prestigious event, the ENDF ensemble captivated audiences with a vibrant fusion of traditional Ethiopian music and modern military compositions.

Their repertoire featured indigenous instruments such as the kebero (double-sided drum) and masenqo (one-stringed bowed lute), offering a unique auditory experience that resonated with the diverse international audience.

Major General Endalkachew Woldekidan, Director of the ENDF Psychological Development Department, commended the band’s performance, stating, “Their professionalism and creativity have elevated Ethiopia’s image worldwide, making both the nation and the ENDF a source of pride.”

Colonel Manyahlew Tadele, ENDF Director of Arts, described the performance as a world-class celebration of Ethiopia’s heritage, highlighting the seamless integration of cultural authenticity with contemporary presentation.

Band leader Lieutenant Colonel Zemecha Bedi confirmed that international audiences and delegates lauded both the musical mastery and captivating stage presence of the ensemble.

Established in 2007, the Spasskaya Tower Festival traditionally features military bands, honor guards, and folk groups. Over the years, it has welcomed participants from 59 countries and drawn more than 900,000 spectators, providing a premier platform for cultural diplomacy and professional exchange. Ethiopia’s participation not only showcased its artistic excellence but also reinforced its growing reputation in the international military music community.
