Ethiopia Advancing Institutional Reforms to Strengthen Democratic Governance: GCS

Addis Ababa, March 30, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia is making sustained progress in building strong and inclusive democratic institutions, the Government Communication Service (GCS) has said, underscoring ongoing reforms aimed at reinforcing governance and national unity.

In a statement issued under the theme “Inclusive Political Reforms for a Solid National Foundation,” the GCS noted that wide-ranging efforts are being undertaken to address longstanding political challenges and guide the country toward a more resilient democratic order.

Central to these reforms is a shift away from exclusionary political narratives that previously strained national cohesion. The government emphasized that current efforts are fostering a more inclusive system in which all citizens and regions have equitable access to power and resources.

According to the statement, this transformation reflects a broader vision of Ethiopia as a shared national home, anchored in unity within diversity and strengthened by balanced political participation.

The GCS also highlighted initiatives aimed at reinforcing a collective national identity across generations. National projects and symbols—including the Adwa Victory Memorial and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam—alongside tourism-driven programs such as Dine for Sheger, Dine for the Nation, and Dine for Generations, were cited as contributing to a growing sense of shared pride.

Efforts to promote dialogue and mutual understanding were also underscored, with the ongoing national dialogue process described as playing a key role in shifting public discourse toward cooperation, reconciliation, and a common future.

In parallel, institutional reforms have been advancing across key sectors. Measures to strengthen the professionalism and independence of security, justice, and democratic institutions are being implemented to ensure accountability to the rule of law and the public.

The restructuring of the National Electoral Board and the Human Rights Commission under independent leadership, along with steps taken to safeguard the neutrality of the national defense forces, were highlighted as key milestones in this process.

The GCS concluded that these developments, supported by expanding political space and improving internal stability, are laying a solid foundation for Ethiopia’s continued progress toward a stable, democratic, and prosperous future.
