Ethiopia and Azerbaijan Elevate Strategic Partnership Through Multi-Sector Cooperation After PM Abiy’s Visit – PMO Press Secretary

Addis Ababa, March 1, 2026 (FMC) — The partnership between Ethiopia and Azerbaijan has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, evolving into a robust collaboration across strategic sectors, according to Billene Seyoum, Press Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister.

In a comprehensive briefing on the official working visit of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Baku, the Press Secretary highlighted strengthened diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. The Prime Minister and his delegation undertook the two-day mission following an invitation from Ilham Aliyev.

Billene noted that the relationship has gained significant momentum, characterized by active exchanges of experience and institutional knowledge. She emphasized that Azerbaijan’s establishment of its embassy in Addis Ababa has played a pivotal role in deepening cooperation.

Economic collaboration remains a central pillar of the bilateral agenda, with both countries expanding engagement in aviation and industrial development. Ethiopian Investment Holdings has engaged in high-level consultations with its Azerbaijani counterpart to align investment priorities and advance joint ventures.

During leadership-level discussions, Prime Minister Abiy and President Aliyev explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in energy, agriculture, industry, and defense. The talks also addressed security, climate change mitigation, and job creation, underscoring the elevated strategic nature of the partnership.

The Prime Minister’s visit included tours of Azerbaijan’s major infrastructure projects, urban modernization initiatives, and technology-driven public service systems. These initiatives demonstrate Azerbaijan’s capacity to transform natural resources into sustainable economic value, offering lessons relevant to Ethiopia’s development objectives.

The Press Secretary stated that the visit provided valuable insights to support Ethiopia’s national projects. She noted parallels between Azerbaijan’s achievements and Ethiopia’s focus on corridor development, heritage preservation, and the expansion of efficient one-stop service centers.
