Ethiopia and Japan Agree to Deepen Military and Security Cooperation

Addis Ababa, April 8, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and Japan have agreed to further strengthen their military and security cooperation.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Defense, Aisha Mohammed, received a delegation led by Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan, Lt. Gen. Sadamasa Oue, for high-level discussions.

The talks focused on exploring avenues for collaboration on security matters that align with the national interests, shared values, and mutual priorities of both countries.

Minister Aisha Mohammed welcomed Japan’s initiative and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s readiness to forge a robust military partnership based on genuine friendship and mutual benefit.

She noted that the cooperation is expected to elevate the long-standing ties between Ethiopia and Japan.

Lt. Gen. Sadamasa Oue, for his part, commended Ethiopia’s contributions to peace and stability in East Africa and across the continent.

He highlighted Japan’s interest in closely collaborating with Ethiopia, particularly in light of the country’s extensive peacekeeping experience.

Oue also expressed Japan’s readiness to support capacity-building efforts at the Ethiopian Peacekeeping Center.
