Ethiopia and Republic of Congo Sign Defense Cooperation Agreement

Addis Ababa, December 12, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia and the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in the military field, with a focus on addressing shared regional security challenges.

The agreement was signed during talks held in Addis Ababa between Ethiopia’s Minister of Defense, Engineer Aisha Mohammed, and the Republic of the Congo’s Minister of National Defense, Lieutenant General Charles Richard Monjo.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Aisha said the MoU carries significant importance in enhancing joint efforts to address regional challenges, including cross-border crime and terrorism.

She emphasized that the evolving global and regional security environment necessitates closer cooperation among countries.

Under the agreement, the two sides committed to working together in areas such as military industrial production, weapons maintenance, education and training, and peacekeeping operations. The MoU is also expected to create opportunities for the joint utilization of the military capabilities of both countries.

Minister Aisha recalled that Ethiopia and the Republic of the Congo share long-standing diplomatic relations dating back to the early 1960s, when the Central African nation gained independence.

She noted that bilateral ties were initially strengthened through multilateral engagement, particularly within the framework of the former Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the African Union (AU), which is headquartered in Addis Ababa.

She further stated that Ethiopia will continue to strengthen its diplomatic and defense cooperation with partner countries.

For his part, Lt. Gen. Charles Richard Monjo described the agreement as an important step toward further enhancing peace and security between the two countries. He said concrete work would begin soon to translate the MoU into action.

The Congolese defense minister also extended an invitation to Minister Aisha Mohammed to visit Congo-Brazzaville, ENDF Online Media told Fana Media Corporation.
