Ethiopia and UAE Explore Deeper Financial and Banking Cooperation

Addis Ababa, October 13, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have explored opportunities to deepen financial and banking cooperation, including through greater exchange of expertise between their central banks.

National Bank of Ethiopia Governor Eyob Tekalign held talks with Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the UAE and the UAE’s Governor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the financial and banking sectors and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise between the two institutions.

The meeting builds on the existing partnership between Ethiopia and the UAE, with both sides exploring avenues to further reinforce financial-sector ties and broader bilateral relations.

The engagement forms part of Ethiopia’s ongoing diplomatic and economic discussions with international partners during the Annual Meetings, which bring together central bank governors, finance ministers and development institutions to address global economic and financial priorities.
