Ethiopia and UAE reaffirm shared resolve to enhance cooperation on counterterrorism & extremism

Addis Ababa, April 6, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates have agreed to further enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism and counter-extremism efforts, following high-level discussions.

The understanding was reached during talks between Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Jemal Beker, and the Special Envoy of the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs for Countering Extremism and Terrorism, Maqsood Cruz.

During the meeting, Ambassador Jemal Beker reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to full partnership with the United Arab Emirates in addressing evolving security challenges. He highlighted Ethiopia’s active role in counter-terrorism operations and its continued contribution to regional peace and stability.

He further emphasized that Ethiopia will continue to serve as a pillar of peace and security in the Horn of Africa through its engagement in counter-terrorism operations, border security, and broader regional peace efforts.

For his part, Maqsood Cruz described Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates as strategic partners, recalling the recent visit of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to the UAE, which he said marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations.

The UAE side also outlined its ongoing efforts to combat extremism and terrorism, including coordination at both regional and international levels.

Both sides agreed to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation in counter-terrorism and counter-extremism, according to information provided to Fana Digital by the Ethiopian Embassy in the United Arab Emirates.
