Addis Ababa, July 24, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia has unveiled an ambitious nationwide campaign to plant 700 million seedlings in a single day, as part of its expansive Green Legacy Initiative, a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond reforestation to encompass environmental restoration, sustainable development, and climate resilience.
Scheduled for July 31, 2025, the mass tree planting drive is expected to mobilize millions of citizens across the country, the Office of the Prime Minister confirmed this morning. The campaign represents a key pillar in Ethiopia’s goal to plant 7.5 billion seedlings during the current rainy season.
In an official statement, the Office of the Prime Minister urged the public to rise to the challenge: “On July 31, 2025, Ethiopia will attempt to plant 700 million seedlings in one day. Let’s get ready as the countdown begins.”
Since its launch in 2019, the Green Legacy Initiative has facilitated the planting of over 40 billion trees nationwide. This year’s campaign aims to exceed the 47.5 billion seedling milestone, with government plans to further raise the cumulative total in the coming year, demonstrating Ethiopia’s steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship, landscape recovery, and sustainable livelihoods.
More than a reforestation effort, the Green Legacy Initiative integrates agroforestry, urban greening, soil and water conservation, and livelihood enhancement—making it a flagship program central to Ethiopia’s long-term vision for sustainable development and climate resilience.
