Ethiopia Assumes Co-Chairmanship of Pandemic Fund Governing Board

Addis Ababa, June 19, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, has been elected Co-Chair of the Governing Board of the Pandemic Fund, joining Indonesia’s former Minister of Finance, Dr. Chatib Basri, in leading the body.

She formally assumed the position from Rwanda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, who concluded his term as Co-Chair of the Governing Board.

Following her appointment, Dr. Mekdes expressed appreciation to her fellow Co-Chair and Governing Board members for their trust and confidence. She said she was honored to serve in the role and reaffirmed her commitment to advancing stronger preparedness, resilient health systems, and country-led action aimed at safeguarding shared global health security.

She also extended her appreciation to Dr. Nsanzimana for his dedicated leadership and service during his tenure.

The Pandemic Fund welcomed Dr. Mekdes’ appointment, stating that her leadership will be important in sustaining momentum, deepening partnerships, and supporting country-led investment in pandemic preparedness and response.

The Governing Board of the Pandemic Fund serves as its highest decision-making body, comprising 21 voting members. It brings together sovereign contributors and co-investing countries, alongside representation from philanthropic organizations and civil society. The Board is co-chaired by Dr. Chatib Basri and Dr. Mekdes Daba.

The Pandemic Fund is a global multi-stakeholder financial mechanism established to help low- and middle-income countries strengthen their capacity to prevent, detect, and rapidly respond to health emergencies.
