Addis Ababa, October 22, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia called for renewed global solidarity, development-focused trade rules, and strengthened multilateral cooperation to support developing economies confronting rising structural challenges.
Ethiopian delegation is participating in the high-level platform of the 16th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XVI) in Geneva.
Delivering Ethiopia’s statement during the General Debate, Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew, Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, commended UNCTAD for six decades of meaningful contributions to developing countries and highlighted Ethiopia’s ongoing transformation under its Home-Grown Economic Reform Agenda.
He noted that, despite global headwinds, Ethiopia has sustained steady economic growth while creating new opportunities for private sector participation.
Against the backdrop of climate shocks, debt distress, and widening digital divides, Ambassador Tsegab urged the international community to honor commitments on development finance, climate investment, and technology transfer.
He emphasized the urgent need to reform the international financial architecture to make it “more inclusive, equitable, and responsive to countries in vulnerable situations.”
Ethiopia also voiced its positions during ministerial meetings of the G77 and China, the Africa Group, and the LDC and Landlocked Developing Countries coalitions, calling on development partners to reinforce and expand support to UNCTAD.
Such backing, Ethiopia argued, is essential for enabling the organization to deliver on its mandate and respond effectively to the evolving priorities of Member States, particularly those in special economic circumstances.
UNCTAD XVI continues this week in Geneva, featuring negotiations, ministerial consultations, and the adoption of a new mandate that will guide the organization’s work over the next four years, Permanent Mission of Ethiopia in Geneva told Fana Media Corporation.
