Ethiopia, China Intensify Engagement on Infrastructure Funding and Debt Settlement Process

Addis Ababa, March 18, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, has held talks with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ethiopia, Chen Hai, and a delegation from the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim Bank) on Wednesday.

The discussions, according to Ethiopia’s finance ministry, focused on strengthening cooperation on key infrastructure financing and advancing the East African country’s debt restructuring process.

The discussions centered on potential financing options for the Bishoftu International Airport, a major infrastructure project expected to enhance Ethiopia’s aviation capacity and support long-term economic growth.

Both sides also reviewed progress under Ethiopia’s debt treatment framework, assessing developments as the restructuring process approaches its final stage.

Minister Ahmed Shide expressed appreciation for China’s leadership role as Co-Chair of the Official Creditor Committee (OCC), commending its constructive engagement and continued support throughout the process.

He underscored the importance of sustaining momentum in the final phase and welcomed China’s further support, particularly in facilitating the conclusion of negotiations with Ethiopia’s commercial creditors.
