Addis Ababa, August 7, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie has underscored that the strategic partnership between Ethiopia and China is growing beyond commercial interests, increasingly extending into global cooperation and humanitarian engagement.
Speaking at the launch of the 2025 Chinese Medical Volunteers’ African Charity Mission and International Medical Volunteers’ Campaign, held at the Silk Road General Hospital in Addis Ababa, President Taye praised the initiative as a symbol of enduring friendship and evolving collaboration between the two countries.
The event was attended by Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba and Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Chen Hai, alongside senior health officials and Chinese medical professionals.
As part of the campaign, Chinese medical volunteers will deliver a wide range of specialized surgical services—including pediatric cardiac operations, cataract removal, gynecological and neurosurgical procedures, and ophthalmology. The outreach will also include eye and heart screenings at selected public and private schools, and cervical cancer screening services for women aged 18 and above.
President Taye expressed deep appreciation for the commitment of the Chinese volunteers and voiced confidence that their support would offer vital care to children and vulnerable communities. He emphasized the importance of skills and knowledge transfer during the volunteers’ mission, noting that Ethiopia–China relations are becoming increasingly impactful on the international stage, beyond their well-established trade relations.
Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba described the initiative as a testament to the deep-rooted solidarity and shared values between the peoples of Ethiopia and China. “Healthcare knows no borders,” she said, adding that this volunteer campaign sends a powerful message of compassion and shared progress.
She recalled that last year’s summer health initiative reached over 4 million people, and that this year’s campaign aims to expand its reach to 5 million underserved citizens. The Minister thanked the Chinese medical volunteers for their role in this expanding public health mission.
Chinese Ambassador Chen Hai reaffirmed the strength of China–Africa relations, referring to Ethiopia as a close friend, partner, and brother. He noted that China–Africa health cooperation is entering a new stage, marked by expanding impact and deepening collaboration. Ambassador Chen highlighted the professionalism and dedication of the Chinese medical team, stating that their contribution goes beyond service delivery to represent a growing spirit of partnership and solidarity.
“This program offers more than medical assistance—it delivers real health outcomes and strengthens the foundation of our ongoing medical cooperation,” he said.
