Addis Ababa, September 1, 2026 (FMC) — The upcoming 21st Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day will provide an important platform for strengthening national cohesion, advancing sustainable peace and development, and deepening ties among the country’s diverse communities, Speaker of the House of Federation Agegnehu Teshager said.
The House of Federation, Ethiopia’s upper chamber, is coordinating preparations for the annual celebration, with its organizing committee currently reviewing the event’s master plan.
According to the Speaker, Ethiopia Day creates an opportunity for the country’s nations, nationalities and peoples to exchange experiences, traditions and cultural values while reinforcing democratic unity.
He said the celebration should also encourage collective efforts toward lasting peace, development and economic growth, while strengthening solidarity and social ties among Ethiopia’s diverse communities.
The Speaker said preparations are being undertaken with a focus on ensuring that the celebration produces meaningful political, social and economic outcomes.
He further noted that this year’s Ethiopia Day carries particular significance as it comes after major national developments, including the country’s seventh general election and the national dialogue process, which he said have helped shape Ethiopia’s next phase and opened a new chapter of national aspirations.
The 21st Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day will be celebrated in Jimma, Oromia Regional State, a city known for its historical and cultural heritage, including the Gadaa system, as well as its diverse communities and traditions.
The celebration is expected to be accompanied by major national events linked to development and democratic institution-building, according to information from the House of Federation.
