Ethiopia demonstrating practical leadership in Pan-Africanism: GCS

Addis Ababa, February 13, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia is demonstrating its commitment to the Pan-African movement by hosting the African Union Summit 2026 and the 2nd Italy-Africa Summit, Government Communication Service State Minister Tesfahun Gobezay said on Thursday.

The State Minister briefed the media on preparations for the high-level gatherings, which will take place in Addis Ababa over the next three days. He noted that comprehensive arrangements are in place, including coordinated leadership, streamlined transport logistics, and the deployment of skilled volunteer cadets proficient in the African Union’s working languages.

According to Tesfahun, this year’s summit theme reflects Africa’s resolve toward sustainable development and the realization of Agenda 2063 goals. He emphasized that Ethiopia continues to serve as a model for the continent through its active role in hosting such diplomatic events.

Beyond diplomacy, the State Minister highlighted Ethiopia’s achievements in water resource management and environmental protection, citing the Green Legacy initiative, which has planted billions of seedlings and increased the nation’s forest coverage from 17 percent to 23 percent.

The completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) further exemplifies Ethiopia’s leadership, enabling regional energy integration and extending power supply access to neighboring countries. Efforts to manage water resources effectively are also visible in transformative corridor and riverside development projects, initially launched in Addis Ababa and now being scaled to regional cities to support holistic urban growth.

Tesfahun also spoke on the historic nature of the 2nd Italy-Africa Summit, which will be held on African soil for the first time in Addis Ababa. The forum will focus on water, agriculture, energy, education, and health, providing a platform for Ethiopia to share its development experiences.

More than 17,000 delegates are expected to attend the events, with accreditation issued to numerous media professionals. In addition to formal sessions, various bilateral discussions will take place, and African Union leaders are scheduled to tour Ethiopia’s recent development projects and key tourist destinations.

The State Minister noted that the summits also provide an opportunity for Ethiopia to reaffirm its enduring bonds of brotherhood and friendship with fellow African nations.
