Ethiopia earns $5.1 billion from merchandise exports in first six months, PM Abiy reports

Addis Ababa, February 3, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) told lawmakers today that Ethiopia has recorded $5.1 billion in merchandise exports during the first six months of the 2025/26 fiscal year, achieving 120 percent of the planned target.

Addressing the 10th regular session of the Ethiopian Parliament today, PM Abiy highlighted that the country also earned $4.5 billion from service exports and $4.6 billion through remittances, reflecting strong performance across multiple revenue streams.

In addition, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows reached $2.3 billion, demonstrating successful macroeconomic management and growing investor confidence in Ethiopia’s economy.

The Prime Minister emphasized that these figures underscore the effectiveness of ongoing economic reforms and the government’s efforts to create a favorable environment for trade, investment, and industrial growth.

He added that continued focus on exports, diversification, and innovation will be key to sustaining national economic growth and achieving the 2025/26 fiscal year targets.

PM Abiy also noted that the growth in export revenues is complemented by robust performance in other sectors, including agriculture, industry, and services, positioning Ethiopia among the fastest-growing economies in Africa.
