Ethiopia Elected Vice-President of UN Human Rights Council

Addis Ababa, December 8, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia has been elected, by consensus, as Vice-President and Bureau Member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) during the Council’s organizational meeting held today in Geneva, Switzerland.

The country will assume the role for one year on behalf of the African Group.

Following the election, Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew Daka, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, will serve as Vice-President of the Council.

The HRC Bureau consists of one President and four Vice-Presidents representing regional groups. The Bureau plays a pivotal role in steering the Council’s agenda, coordinating meetings, facilitating dialogue among member states, and ensuring the effective conduct of the Council’s work throughout the year.

Ethiopia’s election to the leadership position demonstrates its constructive engagement in the United Nations system and its commitment to multilateral cooperation in the promotion and protection of human rights.

Ethiopia is currently a member of the UN Human Rights Council, the Ethiopian Permanent Mission in Geneva told Fana Media Corporation.
