Addis Ababa, August 2, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has finalized preparations for its historic One-Day National Tree Planting Campaign, with the country set to plant 800 million tree seedlings on August 3 as part of the #Green_Legacy Initiative.
Nationwide preparations have been completed for the landmark campaign, with planting sites identified, seedlings prepared and logistical arrangements finalized to ensure broad public participation across regional states and city administrations.
Being conducted under the theme “Let’s Plant Hope,” the one-day campaign is expected to bring together millions of Ethiopians in a collective effort to strengthen environmental restoration, climate resilience and sustainable development.
Preparations for the campaign include the establishment of planting sites, preparation and transportation of seedlings, mobilization of communities, and coordination among stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the massive national undertaking.
Regional authorities have emphasized that the Green Legacy Initiative goes beyond tree planting, highlighting its contribution to restoring degraded landscapes, protecting biodiversity, conserving natural resources, improving agricultural productivity, strengthening food security and addressing the impacts of climate change.
The initiative has also supported the expansion of fruit tree cultivation, improved soil and water conservation, enhanced ecosystems and created additional sources of food and income for communities.
Since the launch of the Green Legacy Initiative in 2019, Ethiopia has recorded a remarkable tree planting trajectory, with millions of citizens participating every year.
The country planted 4.7 billion seedlings in 2019, followed by 5.9 billion in 2020, 6.8 billion in 2021, 7.2 billion in 2022, 7.5 billion in 2023, and another 7.5 billion in 2024. In 2025, Ethiopia planted about 8 billion seedlings, bringing the cumulative achievement to more than 48 billion seedlings since the initiative began.
In 2026, Ethiopia is targeting the planting of 8.5 billion additional seedlings, including the 800 million seedlings planned for the One-Day National Tree Planting Campaign, which is expected to raise the total number planted since 2019 to around 56 billion seedlings.
Looking ahead, Ethiopia aims to reach 65 billion planted seedlings by the end of the 2027 Green Legacy campaign, as the country prepares to host COP32 and showcase its environmental restoration and climate action efforts to the world.
The August 3 One-Day National Tree Planting Campaign is set to mark another historic chapter in Ethiopia’s Green Legacy journey, demonstrating the country’s commitment to building a greener, climate-resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.
