Ethiopia Gains Global Recognition Through Diplomatic Milestones and COP32 Hosting Role – MFA

Addis Ababa, November 27, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia has strengthened its global diplomatic profile through a series of key international engagements and was recently selected to host the 2027 UN Climate Change Conference (COP32), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Spokesperson Nebiat Getachew delivered a press briefing highlighting Ethiopia’s diplomatic achievements over the past two weeks and key regional and international developments.

He said the selection to host COP32 reflects the international community’s recognition of Ethiopia’s contributions to global climate action.

Nebiat underscored that the Green Legacy Initiative, launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, exemplifies Ethiopia’s commitment to addressing climate change.

The Spokesperson also highlighted progress in renewable energy, the expansion of electric vehicle use, and the development of clean and green cities through corridor and riverside projects—all of which bolstered Ethiopia’s candidacy for the summit and elevated the country’s diplomatic standing.

The spokesperson noted the appointment of Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos as President-Designate of COP32, reinforcing Ethiopia’s influence on the global stage.

He also recalled the Ethiopian delegation’s participation in the recent G20 Summit, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, which advanced both Ethiopia’s and Africa’s continental and international priorities.

Nebiat further highlighted recent visits from the leaders of Malaysia and Singapore as demonstrations of Ethiopia’s focus on economic cooperation and results-oriented diplomacy.

Concluding the briefing, the spokesperson encouraged active media participation in the 3rd IGAD Media Awards, scheduled this Saturday and Sunday in Addis Ababa, and addressed other ongoing regional and international developments.
