Ethiopia inaugurates landmark eco-lodge at Dendi Crater Lake area, blending tourism dev’t with nature conservation

Addis Ababa, April 19, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially inaugurated the Haroo Dendi Lodge in the Oromia Region, marking a new addition to the country’s eco-tourism development under the prime ministerial “Dine for Generation” initiative.

In a social media post, the Prime Minister described the project as a key milestone, saying it represents “the new face of Ethiopia, where modern architecture follows the heartbeat of nature.”

He said the development goes beyond ecotourism, emphasizing that it was designed to honour the country’s natural legacy. “We didn’t just build, we chose to honour our natural legacy,” he stated, adding that the project magnifies the existing beauty of the Dendi Crater Lake for future generations while respecting the heritage of local communities.

According to him, the lodge is a human-centred sanctuary built to respect the land and empower surrounding communities, aligning development with environmental and cultural preservation.

The Prime Minister also underscored that the project reflects the government’s commitment to delivering on development promises, describing it as “a testament to promises made and promises delivered.”

He further noted that the lodge enhances Ethiopia’s positioning as a tourism destination, saying it elevates the country as “a destination worthy of being visited, invested in, and cherished.”

Highlighting the broader economic significance of the sector, he stated that tourism is a central pillar of national development, adding that it is not merely a sector but one that is actively shaping Ethiopia’s future growth trajectory.
