Addis Ababa, August 19, 2025 (FMC) — Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh launched the 144-kilometer Mieso–Dire Dawa expressway, describing it as a historic infrastructure project that strengthens national unity, enhances regional connectivity, and advances Ethiopia’s economic and social development.
The expressway, part of the Eastern Economic Corridor, is being constructed with 62.6 billion birr in financing from the World Bank and is scheduled for completion within four years. It will connect the Oromia and Somali regions with the city of Dire Dawa, facilitating economic and social interaction among communities, reducing transport costs, and saving time for movement from ports to central Ethiopia.
The launch ceremony was attended by senior federal and regional officials, including Adem Farah, Deputy Prime Minister and Vice President of the Prosperity Party.
In his address, Temesgen said that for a developing country like Ethiopia, investing in road infrastructure is essential to enhance economic growth and improve the living standards of citizens. He described the Mieso–Dire Dawa Expressway as a “crucial infrastructure that demonstrates the government’s commitment to modernizing transportation and realizing our vision of building a prosperous Ethiopia.”
He emphasized that the expressway will significantly enhance economic and social interactions by connecting the Oromia and Somali regions with Dire Dawa. The road will create substantial market opportunities for domestic products and support the achievement of regional free trade objectives.
Temesgen highlighted that the Eastern Corridor is the country’s largest trade route, handling the majority of inbound and outbound trade. He pointed out that the expressway, by connecting key regions to central Ethiopia, will reduce costs and save time. He also noted that its integration with the national railway system will provide a streamlined transportation option and enhance market competitiveness.
The Deputy Prime Minister called on all stakeholders to fulfill their responsibilities effectively, ensuring that the Mieso–Dire Dawa Expressway is completed on schedule, meets quality standards, and is delivered with discipline and efficiency. He assured that the government will provide continuous support and monitoring day and night to guarantee the project’s success.
Temesgen further stated that Ethiopia will continue to implement “history-making projects that herald the era of the country’s revival,” completing initiatives quickly and with high quality. He added that it is imperative not to leave any part of the project unfinished or compromised in quality during this era of national development.
The launch of the expressway underscores Ethiopia’s focus on expanding infrastructure, fostering national cohesion, enhancing regional integration, and positioning the country as a competitive player in continental trade networks.
