Ethiopia Launches Mobile App to Protect Citizens’ Rights Overseas

Addis Ababa, August 21, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia today launched a mobile application designed to help its citizens deployed overseas safeguard their rights and access essential information, officials said.

The application, named “LeMengede,” was jointly developed by the Ministry of Labor and Skills and the International Labor Organization (ILO). It provides users with critical information on destination countries, labor rights and responsibilities, and the locations of Ethiopian embassies and consular offices abroad.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Labor and Skills State Minister Nebiha Mohammed said the app is intended to empower Ethiopian citizens by giving them access to key information, including the rules and regulations governing their destination countries, as well as opportunities in the global labor market.

ILO Country Director for Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan, Khumbula Ndaba, described the platform as a “unique tool” that offers multilingual guidance on rights, safe migration practices, and emergency support mechanisms for Ethiopian migrant workers. He emphasized that the application helps users make informed decisions before departure and provides support in times of need.

Ndaba further stressed ILO’s commitment to supporting the Ministry of Labor and Skills and other national partners to ensure the effective adoption and integration of tools like LeMengede into Ethiopia’s migration governance framework. “We will continue to facilitate regional knowledge sharing, capacity building, and technical assistance so that Ethiopia and neighboring countries can collectively strengthen the protection of migrant workers,” he said.

The launch marks a significant step in Ethiopia’s efforts to safeguard its citizens abroad while enhancing access to timely and practical information on labor and migration matters.
