Addis Ababa, April 16, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially launched a three-year human resource reform program aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, enhancing professional competence, and modernizing the Ministry’s human resource management systems.
The program was unveiled in a ceremony attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos, State Minister Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye, UNDP Representative in Ethiopia Samuel Doe, and senior officials of the Ministry.
The initiative is designed to provide a structured framework for capacity-building and training, aligning the Ministry’s workforce with the evolving demands of contemporary diplomacy. It also seeks to improve operational efficiency and institutional effectiveness through the adoption of modern HR practices.
Minister Gedion Timothewos highlighted the Ministry’s historical role as a pioneer in Ethiopia’s modern governmental structure and emphasized that the reform program will enhance the professional competence of its staff. He noted that the initiative will be implemented over the next three years to ensure systematic and sustainable improvements.
State Minister Berhanu Tsegaye underscored the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to modernize institutional systems and operational practices. He said the reform plan will equip personnel with the skills, knowledge, and performance capacity required to respond effectively to the challenges of modern diplomacy.
UNDP Representative Samuel Doe reaffirmed his organization’s support for the program, pledging technical assistance and training. He added that the initiative will help strengthen Ethiopia’s engagement in international diplomatic platforms by fostering a capable and well-prepared workforce.
