Ethiopia Marks Seven Years of Reform-Driven Progress, Finance Minister Highlights Economic Resilience

Addis Ababa, September 8, 2025 (FMC) — Finance Minister Ahmed Shide praised Ethiopia’s successful reforms and resilience over the past seven years, emphasizing that the nation has built a strong foundation for a secure and competitive economy.

The remarks came during the 3rd Pagumen Progress Day, held at the Addis Ababa Science Museum under the theme “Achievement for Sustainable Growth,” an event celebrating Ethiopia’s reform-driven accomplishments and development milestones since 2017.

The celebration was attended by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, Industry Minister Melaku Alebel, Mines Minister Engineer Habtamu Tegene, along with state ministers, senior officials, and invited guests.

In his keynote address, Minister Ahmed highlighted that the country’s transformation over the past seven years has strengthened institutions and established political and economic systems capable of sustaining long-term growth.

“The reforms implemented since the 2017 fiscal year have laid a solid foundation for a secure, competitive, and resilient economy,” Minister Ahmed said, noting tangible progress across key sectors, including agriculture, industry, mining, revenue collection, and finance.

He urged continued commitment and perseverance to maintain the momentum of reform and further accelerate Ethiopia’s development trajectory.

Officials also noted that the comprehensive economic reforms have already yielded significant results, including increased government revenue, expanded exports, improved foreign exchange earnings, and stabilized inflation.

This year’s Pagumen Progress Day coincided with two historic national milestones: the signing of an agreement to launch domestic fertilizer production, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration, and the imminent inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a symbol of national unity and resilience.

The event featured exhibitions and presentations at the Science Museum, showcasing Ethiopia’s achievements and the strides made in its economic and development sectors over the past seven years.
