Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has delivered a forceful warning that Ethiopia must remain vigilant, strategically prepared and nationally united as profound shifts reshape the regional and global order, stressing that the country cannot afford to be caught off guard by developments unfolding around it.
Addressing Parliament after taking the constitutional oath for a renewed five-year term, PM Abiy said Ethiopia is entering the new political chapter at a time when its neighborhood and the wider international environment are undergoing rapid and unpredictable transformation.
He pointed to sweeping changes across the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, the Gulf and the Middle East, stressing that Ethiopia cannot remain insulated from developments in its surrounding environment.
The Prime Minister invoked the Ethiopian farmer’s wisdom that the coming rainy season favors the farmer who has already ploughed his field, using the analogy to underscore the importance of anticipating change and preparing before circumstances become unavoidable.
He said those who understand emerging trends, anticipate what is coming and prepare themselves accordingly gain the capacity to navigate change, while those who remain closed, complacent or unprepared risk paying a far heavier price.
PM Abiy drew a direct lesson from Ethiopia’s history, recalling periods when the country confronted external challenges after failing to adequately prepare for a changing strategic environment.
He referred particularly to the experience surrounding the Second Italian Invasion, when Ethiopia faced an adversary equipped with technologies and capabilities that represented a radically changed battlefield. The lesson, he stressed, is not merely historical: Ethiopia must ensure that it is never again forced to confront a new strategic reality from a position of inadequate preparedness.
“There is no darker day than confronting a front for which we are unprepared,” PM Abiy said, underscoring the gravity of strategic complacency.
He stressed that the challenge facing Ethiopia today extends well beyond any single threat. The country is situated in a strategically vital part of the world where developments in East Africa, the Red Sea, the Gulf and the Middle East carry direct implications for its national interests.
PM Abiy said the changes sweeping the region are both a challenge and an opportunity, but warned that Ethiopia’s ability to benefit from the opportunities will depend on the strength and preparedness with which it confronts the emerging environment.
His message also carried a clear strategic warning against weakness. Ethiopia, he said, must possess the capacity to determine its own affairs rather than allowing changing circumstances or external forces to determine its trajectory.
The Prime Minister linked that strategic preparedness to national unity, arguing that Ethiopia cannot navigate an increasingly complex environment while its strength is fragmented internally. The indigenous Medemer philosophy, he said, provides the basis for bringing Ethiopia’s diverse forces together around shared national interests.
He further cautioned against allowing political competition and internal disagreements to obscure the larger strategic environment, stressing that Ethiopia must look beyond immediate disputes and understand the forces reshaping the region and the wider world.
The message comes as Ethiopia begins a new five-year political chapter following the June 2026 general election and the formation of the new Medemer Government.
PM Abiy said the new period must therefore be approached with vigilance, strategic clarity and collective responsibility, ensuring that Ethiopia is prepared not only to withstand changes around it but also to pursue its national interests with confidence and strength.
His remarks placed preparedness at the heart of Ethiopia’s next chapter: a country that understands the lessons of its past, watches the changes around it, strengthens its internal cohesion and refuses to leave its future at the mercy of forces beyond its control.
