Addis Ababa, September 9, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s 2025 Green Legacy campaign officially concluded today with a tree-planting event at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the Office of the Prime Minister (PMO) reported.
Official pictures shared on the PMO’s social media accounts show Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, senior government officials, leaders from various African countries, and the Prime Minister of Barbados participating in the symbolic tree-planting ceremony during the grand inauguration of GERD.
Since the inception of the Green Legacy initiative seven years ago, Ethiopia has planted over 48 billion tree seedlings, with plans to surpass 54 billion by next year. This year alone, the nation planted over 7.5 billion seedlings, according to government sources.
The initiative underscores Ethiopia’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, and the restoration of degraded landscapes, while highlighting the integration of the country’s environmental goals with major national development milestones.
