Addis Ababa, August 13, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) have signed an agreement to accelerate the development of solar mini-grid and solar park projects, marking a significant step in advancing the country’s renewable energy ambitions.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, State Minister of Water and Energy Sultan Welle said energy is the engine of growth for any nation, stressing that Ethiopia has placed strong emphasis on fully harnessing its energy sector. He highlighted the crucial role of development partners in supporting the country’s priority areas, particularly in expanding and transforming solar energy infrastructure.
Sultan said the agreed initiatives reflect Ethiopia’s steadfast commitment to tapping solar power, advancing rural electrification, and creating new opportunities for socio-economic progress.
“Our collaborations with the ISA and partner organizations will undoubtedly accelerate Ethiopia’s energy transition, foster innovation, and stimulate investments,” he affirmed.
With abundant solar resources, Ethiopia is well-positioned to leverage renewable energy not only to meet domestic demand but also to emerge as a regional energy hub, he noted. He further underscored the government’s commitment to fostering a favorable environment for sustainable energy projects, empowering local communities, and ensuring clean energy access for all citizens.
ISA Director General Ashish Khanna said the organization’s support to Ethiopia focuses on agriculture and rural mini-grid initiatives, as well as providing capacity-building training and policy and regulatory assistance. He emphasized that ISA’s engagement in Ethiopia is guided by the government’s own priorities, including advancing the country’s solar transformation.
