Ethiopia Proposes BRICS Sports Cooperation Framework to Turn Commitments into Action

Addis Ababa, August 23, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has proposed a practical BRICS Sports Cooperation Framework aimed at translating shared commitments among BRICS countries into concrete programs and partnerships.

The proposal was presented at the 2026 BRICS Sports Ministers’ Meeting in Visakhapatnam, India, where Ethiopia also called for stronger and more practical cooperation in sports among BRICS countries.

Ethiopia highlighted its experience in long-distance running and grassroots sports, calling for greater cooperation in athlete development and sports science. It also reaffirmed its commitment to clean sport and athlete welfare.

The country advocated greater promotion of traditional sports and broader participation of women, youth and persons with disabilities in sporting activities.

Ethiopia also highlighted the potential of sports tourism and investment to support economic development, pointing to the broader opportunities that stronger sports cooperation can create.

Through the proposed framework, Ethiopia is seeking to translate shared BRICS commitments in sports into practical programs and partnerships.
