Ethiopia Puts Tourism at Heart of BRICS Cooperation Agenda

Addis Ababa, August 23, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has called for stronger tourism cooperation within BRICS, positioning the sector as a strategic avenue for economic growth, sustainable development and deeper people-to-people ties among member and partner countries.

Speaking at the BRICS Tourism Ministerial Meeting in Jaipur, the Ethiopian delegation highlighted the country’s cultural heritage and natural attractions while underscoring the potential of tourism to generate broader economic and development opportunities.

The delegation emphasized sustainable tourism, digital innovation, artificial intelligence and skills development as key areas for advancing cooperation among BRICS countries.

Ethiopia also proposed the establishment of a BRICS Travel Mart and a Tourism Centre of Excellence to facilitate joint tourism products, promote investment, advance research and strengthen capacity building.

The delegation further highlighted the role of Ethiopian Airlines in connecting Africa with BRICS partner countries, while presenting Addis Ababa’s potential to develop as an international hub for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE).

Ethiopia expressed its readiness to translate tourism cooperation within BRICS into concrete initiatives and investment opportunities, reinforcing the sector’s role in expanding economic links and people-to-people connections across the partnership.
