Addis Ababa, June 11, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia is firmly committed to achieving the targets of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Zena Abebe, Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, told Fana Media Corporation that the country is implementing a wide range of initiatives to build a resilient and sustainable agriculture and nutrition system. His remarks came during a two-day regional workshop in Bishoftu organized by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to validate Ethiopia’s data for the 5th CAADP Biennial Review.
Highlighting Ethiopia’s progress, Mr. Zena noted key achievements in surplus wheat production, the Bounty of the Basket initiative, the Green Legacy campaign, and national efforts in climate change mitigation. These initiatives reflect Ethiopia’s drive to transform its agricultural sector and improve food and nutrition security.
He emphasized that Ethiopia is also prioritizing the credibility and international acceptance of its agricultural performance data. “We are aligning our performance evaluation with globally recognized standards and will submit the verified results to the African Union Commission as part of the Biennial Review process,” Mr. Zena said.
He added that work is underway to validate agricultural performance data covering the period from 2023 to 2025, in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning and Development, the Ministry of Finance, and other key institutions.
The CAADP Biennial Review, adopted under the Malabo Declaration, serves as the African Union’s main accountability mechanism for measuring progress toward agricultural transformation, poverty reduction, and resilience.
IGAD’s Head of Mission to Ethiopia, Mr. Abebaw Bihonegn, confirmed that the bloc will continue supporting Ethiopia in its efforts to meet CAADP targets. Speaking to FMC, he also stressed the importance of coordinated reporting across sectors and reaffirmed IGAD’s role in mobilizing resources and supporting regional programs aligned with CAADP goals.
“Reliable data is the foundation of effective policymaking and resilience building,” he noted, underscoring the significance of the validation exercise.
The workshop, which brought together national stakeholders and technical experts, is a critical step in finalizing Ethiopia’s submission to the African Union for the 5th CAADP Biennial Review report, which tracks progress on commitments such as ending hunger, halving poverty, boosting intra-African agricultural trade, and enhancing resilience to climate variability.
