Addis Ababa, November 19, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia has been honored by the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC) for its effective implementation of Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), a provision designed to shield public health policies from tobacco industry interference.
The award was presented to Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, during a special ceremony held on the sidelines of the 11th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the FCTC today.
The recognition highlights Ethiopia’s strong political commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that national tobacco control measures remain transparent, independent, and free from industry influence.
The accolade also reflects the collective efforts of Ethiopian institutions, partner organizations, and civil society actors working to protect the health and wellbeing of the public through evidence-based tobacco control initiatives, the Permanent Mission told Fana Media Corporation.
