Addis Ababa, October 23, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia has achieved *significant progress in consolidating its development partnerships* and securing international support for its economic reform agenda during the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings held recently in Washington, D.C., Finance Minister Ahmed Shide said.
Reflecting on the outcomes of the meetings, Minister Ahmed noted that the Ethiopian delegation “successfully completed its engagements and strengthened strategic relations” with key global financial institutions. The 2025 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings, held under the theme “From Sectors to Systems: Building Job-Rich Economies at Scale,” focused on scaling up systemic development models that create employment and drive inclusive economic transformation.
Ahmed said the Ethiopian delegation held *fruitful and constructive discussions* with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and other senior officials, reaffirming continued IMF support for Ethiopia’s comprehensive macroeconomic reform program. He added that similar progress was made in discussions with World Bank President Ajay Banga, particularly on the alignment of macroeconomic reform measures with development financing and ongoing investment support.
“In our discussions with the IMF, the World Bank, and other international financial institutions, there was a clear and shared understanding that Ethiopia’s reform trajectory is producing tangible results,” the Minister emphasized, adding that development partners expressed readiness to expand cooperation in key growth areas.
Ahmed further highlighted the successful engagement with global institutions to promote financing for Ethiopia’s flagship infrastructure projects, including the construction of the new Ethiopian Airlines Bishoftu International Airport. He also confirmed that the G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatment is progressing well, with memoranda of understanding already signed with most partner countries, and further understandings reached with both the IMF and the World Bank.
He underlined that Ethiopia’s economic progress and achievements across multiple sectors were widely acknowledged and presented as a *positive example* at several international forums.
“Overall, these engagements have reinforced our development partnerships, sustained the momentum of reform implementation, and strengthened international confidence in Ethiopia’s economic direction,” Minister Ahmed concluded.
