Ethiopia successfully contains Marburg virus outbreak after swift national response – Ministry

Addis Ababa, January 26, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health (MoH) has officially announced that the Marburg virus disease outbreak, which emerged in mid-November 2025, has been fully brought under control.

A national consultative forum was held today to formally declare Ethiopia’s achievements in the rapid response, containment, and management of public health emergencies, with a particular focus on the successful control of the Marburg virus.

The event brought together senior government officials and partners, including Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives Tagese Chafo, regional chief administrators, Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba, and representatives of partner institutions.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mekdes underscored that Ethiopia is intensifying efforts to expand access to health services, anchored in prevention, early detection, and effective treatment. She noted that sustained investments are being made to build a strong and epidemic-resilient health system, yielding tangible and measurable outcomes.

As a key example, the Minister confirmed that the recent Marburg virus outbreak has been successfully contained, marking a significant public health milestone for the country.

Dr. Mekdes extended appreciation to health professionals who played a decisive role in the response, commending their dedication and courage in confronting the outbreak, often at personal risk.

She further congratulated the nation on controlling a disease that was new and unprecedented in Ethiopia, emphasizing that the achievement represents a historic turning point in the country’s public health capacity.

The Minister also expressed gratitude to all national and international partners whose support contributed to the successful containment of the disease, reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to safeguarding public health and strengthening preparedness for future emergencies.
