Ethiopia to engage in 80th UN General Assembly with national interests at forefront – MFA

Addis Ababa, September — (FMC) – Ethiopia will actively participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, prioritizing issues that safeguard its national interests, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Nebiat Getachew said today.

Briefing local and international media on current national and international matters, Ambassador Nebiat underscored that Ethiopia’s diplomacy is being reinforced by milestone achievements, including the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and its growing role in global forums.

He noted that the completion of the GERD stands as proof of Ethiopia’s capacity to translate commitments into action. According to him, the project has redefined the long-standing narrative on the Nile River while inspiring new momentum across Africa.

Reflecting on Ethiopia’s role in recent summits, the spokesperson highlighted that the Second African Climate Summit, hosted in Addis Ababa, positioned the country as an agenda-setter in continental and global climate diplomacy. Similarly, he said, Ethiopia played a central role in the Second Africa–CARICOM Summit, emphasizing the deep historical links between Africa and the Caribbean as well as opportunities for strengthened economic cooperation.

Turning to the upcoming UN General Assembly, Ambassador Nebiat stated that Ethiopia will use the global platform to showcase its Green Legacy Initiative, food security programs, renewable energy investments, and other key national priorities. He stressed that Ethiopia is also prepared to engage in bilateral consultations on the margins of the Assembly to advance partnerships and broaden cooperation.
