Ethiopia to Hold 7th General Election on June 1, 2026, NEBE Confirms

Addis Ababa, December 9, 2025 (FMC) — The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has announced that the 7th General Election will take place on June 1, 2026.

NEBE Chairperson Melatwork Hailu briefed the media on the pre-election preparations currently underway for the upcoming national poll. She said the Board has been undertaking a range of activities aimed at ensuring the smooth conduct of the election.

According to Melatwork, efforts have been made to organize branch offices and ensure polling stations are properly arranged and conducive for voting. She further noted that political parties have received training designed to support them in publicizing their programs to voters.

Registration of candidates will be carried out using software developed by the Board, she explained, adding that both political parties and independent aspirants will be able to register through the digital platform.

Voter registration will be conducted through the same software system as well as manually, the chairperson stated. NEBE is also finalizing the development of registration software for election observers.
