Addis Ababa, March 30, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia has been selected to host the first-ever African Traditional Sports and Games Multi-event Festival in 2026, the Ministry of Culture and Sports announced.
The Ethiopian Cultural Sports Federation (ECSF) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Traditional Sports and Games Confederation (ATSGC) to jointly organize the inaugural continental event in Ethiopia.
The agreement formalizes Ethiopia’s role as host of the festival, which is expected to bring together participants from across the continent.
Speaking on the occasion, State Minister for Sports Development at the Ministry, Mekiyu Mohammed, indicated that the agreement will enable Ethiopia to connect its long-standing and vibrant traditional sports heritage with broader continental initiatives. He noted that hosting the festival is expected to contribute to strengthening the country’s national image, while supporting ongoing efforts to develop indigenous sports and pass them on to future generations.
Following the signing ceremony, Hiwot Mohammed, First Vice President of the ATSGC and President of the Ethiopian Cultural Sports Federation, stated that the agreement marks a significant milestone for the advancement of cultural sports in Ethiopia.
President of the Confederation, Kay Kamatua, underscored that Ethiopia’s formal accession to the continental body is expected to generate strong momentum for the promotion of traditional sports across Africa.
He emphasized that the festival will serve not only as a competitive event but also as a platform to advance efforts aimed at reviving, preserving, and elevating Africa’s indigenous sports, while promoting cultural exchange, unity, and peace across the continent.
The agreement further provides for close cooperation between the two institutions in areas such as technical support, media engagement, and the development and standardization of traditional games, as well as training and preparation activities. It is also expected to strengthen Ethiopia’s participation and role within the Confederation.
The inaugural festival is anticipated to offer a vibrant platform for African countries to showcase their unique traditional games, while creating opportunities for young people across the continent to interact, exchange cultural experiences, and strengthen shared heritage.
FMC understands that further details regarding the festival’s schedule and participation guidelines are expected to be announced in due course.
