Addis Ababa, August 31, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia will host the second Climate Week of 2025 from September 1 to 6 in Addis Ababa, under the theme “Dialogues for Ambition and Implementation”, ahead of the Second Africa Climate Summit scheduled from September 8 to 10.
The events are expected to shape both African and global climate action, providing a platform for the continent to assert its priorities in international climate discourse and mobilize climate finance.
Ethiopia’s Ministry of Planning and Development, in collaboration with the Government Communication Service and the Global Green Growth Institute, recently organized a training session in Bishoftu to raise journalists’ awareness about the upcoming summit.
The Climate Week, organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will be held at the Addis Ababa International Convention Centre and is anticipated to draw around 1,500 delegates, according to Mensur Desse, Lead Executive Officer for Environment and Climate Change Agreements and Strategic Partnerships at the Ministry of Planning and Development.
Mensur highlighted that the event will shift the narrative away from viewing African nations solely as victims of climate change, emphasizing instead the continent’s practical and innovative solutions. He pointed to Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, which has planted billions of trees independently, as an example of homegrown solutions that support climate mitigation, food security, and national development.
“The Climate Week will provide a forum to translate countries’ visions and political commitments into tangible actions,” Mensur said, noting that the discussions will feed into the Second Africa Climate Summit and contribute to shaping a common agenda for the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30) in Belém, Brazil.
Senior representatives from African nations, policymakers, civil society, international and regional organizations, and experts will participate in high-level consultations, side discussions, exhibitions, and networking opportunities throughout the week.
The UN established the bi-annual Climate Change Week series to foster global momentum for turning climate commitments into action and to provide a structured platform for setting agendas for upcoming international climate events. The first Climate Week of 2025 took place in Panama in May.
