Addis Ababa, October 31, 2026 (FMC) β Ethiopia is preparing to implement an international traveller connectivity technology system developed by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) to strengthen efforts to combat cross-border crimes and facilitate the extradition of wanted criminals, Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael has announced.
Commissioner General Demelash said that as international crimes become increasingly technology-driven and complex, building modern technological capabilities is essential to controlling transnational criminal activities and bringing perpetrators to justice.
He explained that INTERPOL has developed an international traveller connectivity technology system designed to help member countries identify and apprehend individuals wanted for terrorism and other cross-border crimes, including those who attempt to evade justice by hiding in other countries.
The Ethiopian Federal Police is working in coordination with immigration authorities and the aviation sector to strengthen the mechanisms required to locate and apprehend wanted individuals wherever they may be, with preparations underway to put the technology into operation.
The Commissioner General also attributed the strengthening of cooperation between the Ethiopian Federal Police and INTERPOL to the efforts of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to enhance the institutional capacity of the national police force.
He further disclosed that a coordinated operation conducted by the Ethiopian Federal Police in collaboration with INTERPOL had resulted in the arrest of a criminal suspect who was subsequently extradited to Ethiopia to face justice.
Ethiopia has likewise facilitated the extradition of individuals wanted for various transnational crimes to other countries in accordance with established laws and procedures, he added.
According to the Commissioner General, the technology can monitor millions of travellers daily, making it easier to identify wanted criminals and support law enforcement operations. It is also expected to help detect and track terrorist activities and other criminal operations across different modes of transport.
He indicated that the system would be implemented in Ethiopia in the near future.
Developed by INTERPOL, the international traveller connectivity technology system is designed to strengthen cooperation among member countries in identifying individuals suspected of terrorism and other cross-border crimes and facilitating their lawful extradition to face justice.
