Addis Ababa, October 11, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia will celebrate the 18th National Flag Day on Monday, October 13, 2025, under the theme “National Flag for Heralding the Era of Ethiopia’s Great Leap, National Unity, Sovereignty, and Renewal,” the House of People’s Representatives (HoPR) announced today.
The national flag stands as a powerful emblem of Ethiopia’s sovereignty, political authority, freedom, development, and social cohesion. It embodies the nation’s pride and unity and holds a profound place in the hearts of all Ethiopians.
In its statement, the HoPR recalled that Ethiopia’s heroic forefathers, through their unity and courage, safeguarded the country’s independence and handed down the flag as a symbol of freedom—not only for Ethiopians but for all Black people across the world.
Accordingly, National Flag Day holds a place of great importance in the country’s calendar of national observances. The House emphasized that preserving the dignity of the flag, protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and strengthening national unity for development are solemn responsibilities entrusted to the present generation.
In line with Flag Proclamation No. 863/2006 (as amended), Article 2, the day is celebrated annually on the first Monday of October according to the Ethiopian calendar. For the past eighteen years, it has been observed across the nation in diverse forms.
This year’s celebration will take place at the federal, regional, and city administration levels, accompanied by panel discussions and events that reflect the principles of the flag and reaffirm Ethiopia’s new era of prosperity and renewal. The observance will be held under the auspices of the House of People’s Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Flag Day serves as an occasion for every citizen to renew their pledge before the national flag—to uphold unity, defend sovereignty, and contribute to the nation’s progress, ensuring Ethiopia’s continued prosperity and revival.
At 10:30 a.m. (4:30 local Ethiopian time), the national flag will be simultaneously raised across federal institutions, regional and city administrations, defense camps, as well as Ethiopian embassies and missions around the world, followed by an oath-taking ceremony.
The HoPR added that this year’s National Flag Day will be celebrated in a grand manner with a variety of events symbolizing the nation’s unity, pride, and shared commitment to Ethiopia’s continued renewal.
