Ethiopia to observe 130th anniversary of the Adwa Victory with renewed commitment to sovereignty

Addis Ababa, February 24, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has finalized nationwide preparations to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the historic Adwa Victory, to be observed on March 1, 2026, under the theme “Glorious Past, Radiant Horizon.”

The Adwa Victory refers to Ethiopia’s decisive triumph over colonial Italian forces at the Battle of Adwa in 1896 — a landmark event in which Ethiopian forces successfully defended the nation’s independence against foreign invasion, securing a place in global history as a symbol of anti-colonial resistance.

Briefing the media today, Minister of Defense Aisha Mohammed Mussa said the anniversary represents a defining national moment to reaffirm the foundational pillars of Ethiopian identity and renew the country’s steadfast commitment to sovereignty and unity.

She described the Adwa Victory as an enduring emblem of Ethiopia’s invincible spirit and a watershed historical milestone that resonated far beyond the country’s borders — affirming the freedom of Black peoples and underscoring the principle of equality among nations.

Reflecting on the historic battle fought in the Adwa Mountains in 1896, the Minister noted that the 130th anniversary offers a profound opportunity to reinvigorate the spirit of Ethiopianism — rooted in resilience, collective sacrifice, and unwavering resolve — while reaffirming the pledge to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

She emphasized that the Adwa Victory remains a shared national triumph, achieved through the unity and sacrifice of Ethiopians from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds who stood together in defense of their independence.

According to the Minister, this year’s theme encapsulates a firm national determination to carry forward the legacy forged through the sacrifices of past heroes by advancing lasting peace, sustainable development, and strengthened sovereignty.

She further affirmed that the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, inspired by the heroic legacy of the Adwa Victory, stand fully prepared to ensure national peace and security and safeguard Ethiopia’s continued journey toward a brighter horizon.

A broad range of national and continental activities have been organized to mark the anniversary, including the “Voices of Adwa” youth forums, sports competitions, military and historical exhibitions, artistic performances, and documentary productions commemorating the historic victory.

The commemoration, the Minister added, will serve as a unifying national moment — inviting Ethiopians to reflect on their shared past while collectively envisioning a more prosperous and sovereign future.
