Ethiopia to Strengthen Innovation and Research Through Science and Technology Universities, Says Deputy PM

Addis Ababa, June 20, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh has underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening innovation and research through science and technology universities as part of the country’s broader national development agenda.

In a message shared on his social media page, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that science and technology form the foundation of Ethiopia’s sovereignty and a key pillar of its prosperity. He noted that the government has placed science and technology at the center of efforts to accelerate structural transformation and economic growth.

He made the remarks while attending the graduation ceremony of the 2018 E.C. academic year class at Adama Science and Technology University, describing the occasion as a proud milestone as graduates prepare to begin their professional contributions to national development.

Temesgen emphasized that science and technology universities must serve as hubs of innovation, conducting research aimed at addressing national challenges and developing locally relevant solutions. He commended Adama Science and Technology University for its achievements in advancing research and innovation.

He further stressed that Ethiopia’s educated youth carry a historic responsibility to promote creativity, scientific excellence, and innovation, which he said are essential for achieving digital transformation and sustainable development.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that the government will continue to support graduates of science and technology institutions and foster an enabling environment where research, innovation, and talent can thrive.
